Home Projects Annex No.10 – Biodiversity Survey
...

The following are the schools who completed the initial biodiversity survey in their respective schools and community. Out of 10 schools from Argao and Carcar City in Cebu, Philippines, only four schools that were able to complete it for this year (Table 1). Table 2, shows the sample questionnaires about the biodiversity in their school and community sites, as every school sites was different from one another. Moreover, in Table 3, represents the biodiversity checklist so that we have an initial data of the numbers and presences of fauna and flora in their respective hometown.

Questionnaire about Biodiversity at school sites and surrounding barangay

The Department of Education and the Soil and Water Conservation Foundation, Inc. will soon be implementing a continuation of the biodiversity reserve at high schools that began in late 2010. Formal funding for this project ended in 2014 but the activities were continued through the efforts of the Fellowship of Biodiversity Advocates, a teacher group recognized by DepEd in Cebu Province.

The new project will take the former implementation format and formally add the surrounding barangay in which the selected schools are located. Eventually these barangays and associated schools will form a network of biodiversity conservation sites for exchange of information, technologies, advocacy and other activities generic to the program. The new program will also incorporate aspects of climate change mitigation and adaptation that may be implemented both at the schools and individual homes. This will help augment the current DRRM program at the school.

Prior to the project, we are asking all schools to help with biodiversity information to assist in determining where are the most critical areas where conservation and wise use of natural resources is more greatly needed.

Below are several questions for school students, faculty, parents and other local residents to answer that will help in contributing to information about the local biodiversity in your site.

There is no correct list of answers! The answers generated can be returned electronically to the office of the Soil and Water Conservation Foundation at swcf.cebu@yahoo.com.ph. Once the list is made, please do not forget to list the names of those who collected the data or groups involved.

Flora (Plants)

Question 1: What trees and other plants are now planted inside the school grounds? Make a check list with the common or local name, and scientific name (if known). If the scientific name is not known leave the answer blank. (See sample list of trees in Annex to this document).

Question 2: What trees and other plants are found outside the school grounds but inside the barangay? The list may include trees and other plants brought into the barangay and planted at houses, farms or in reforestation projects. Follow the same procedure as in question 1.

Question 3: Are there trees and other plants that were previously found in the barangay that have disappeared? Again, list by common name, scientific name is known and the source of information. It might be useful to interview the oldest residents of the community to obtain some of the answers.

Fauna

Question 1: What wildlife has been seen withing the school grounds in the past few years? Is the wildlife still observed or is it no longer present? Make a list of the birds, bats, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and Arthropods (insects, butterflies, others). Use the common name (Visayan or English or both) and the scientific name if known. You may wish to make a grouping of domestic animals such as pigs, goats, dogs, cats, etc.

Question 2: What wildlife is no longer seen in the school or barangay. Make a list with the source of the information. Again, interview the oldest residents in the barangay for some of the information.

Question 3: Is there a no hunting ordinance in the barangay? Is it enforced? Please check: Is there an ordinance ____ yes ____ no. If yes, is it enforced ___ yes ___ no. If not enforced, what are the reason(s) why it is not enforced? Please list reasons.

What is possible in a community is only what the community is ready for. Development needs roots in what people understand. It needs roots in what people want. It needs roots in what people trust.
